"Now that more of them are coming home, we need to serve them as well as they served us," the President said. He discussed what has been done and what is planned in the future for increased job security for veterans.
The President specifically promised that he will continue to call on Congress to pass the Veterans Job Corps. Act, a bill he has been pushing to be passed since his campaign in 2012.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for U.S. military veterans who have served some time between the September 11 attacks in 2001 and now stands at 10 percent.
This is a statistic Obama promises to change. "If you fight for your country overseas, you should never have to fight for a job when you come home," he said.
He also acknowledged the efforts of Michelle Obama and Jill Biden in their Joining Forces campaign, which helps veterans to find work in the private sector upon their return home.
Obama spoke of the work that is being done with schools across the country to provide education for the heroes. His administration is working to help more veterans earn their degrees under the Post-9/11 GI Bill.
He stressed his promise that he has the backs of the veterans "not just on one day or one weekend, but 365 days a year."
